FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is sexology?
Sexology is a multidisciplinary field that considers sexuality as an integral part of individuals, communities, and society. Sexologists are mental health professionals who specialize in understanding sexuality through its multiple dimensions, including psychological, relational, cognitive, social, ethical-legal, biological, and somatic aspects. Their scope of practice involves assessing sexual behavior and development, recommending and providing interventions and treatments to promote better sexual well-being in individuals. Sexologists are professionals who carry out interventions in order to improve, maintain or restore sexual health.
Do you offer psychotherapy ?
No. I offer sexology counseling services, sometimes called counseling.
Although both approaches begin with compassionate listening and a thorough evaluation of the difficulties you’re facing (usually 2 to 4 sessions), sexology counseling and psychotherapy are two distinct methods for addressing sexual and emotional issues. Sexology counseling focuses on specific interventions to resolve particular problems. These interventions aim to provide support during challenging moments and may involve developing, maintaining, and/or reinforcing coping strategies by targeting your strengths and resources. Sexology counseling can also offer practical advice, psychological and sexual education, and coaching to help individuals overcome their difficulties.
Psychotherapy (which I do not provide) is a psychological treatment for mental disorders, behavioral disturbances, or any other issues causing psychological suffering or distress. Its goal is to facilitate significant changes in the client’s cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, interpersonal system, personnality or overall well-being.
If you are not sure about which approach you need, we can explore it together and if what you are experiencing would require psychotherapy, I would refer you to someone with those qualifications.
